How to build a safe medical gas system?

The medical gas supply system is particularly important in hospital construction. Only by grasping all links (design, product, construction, supervision, acceptance, management and use) can a safe medical gas system be built.

Medical gas supply system is also called life support system.

There are four main principles for measuring medical gas systems:

One is to ensure the continuity of gas supply and ensure sufficient supply of gas in the gas supply system.

The second is the accuracy of the gas, mainly emphasizing the terminal safety of the gas to ensure that the gas pipeline transports oxygen instead of other gases.

Third, the gas system must have reliable flow and pressure.

Fourth, the gas quality must meet the standards.

The following are several issues that need special attention in the actual operation of the gas system.

  1. Oxygen source

From liquid oxygen, molecular sieve oxygen production, and membrane oxygen production, three oxygen supply methods are compared.

First of all, the oxygen station for producing liquid oxygen has a small footprint and low input costs.

The station building requires only a fence on the outdoor ground, while the molecular sieve oxygen generation station and membrane oxygen generation station require independent single-story buildings. The liquid oxygen station mainly has two tanks, covering an area of about 100 square meters, while the molecular sieve oxygen station and membrane oxygen station occupy a much larger area.

Secondly, the overall cost of using liquid oxygen is the lowest and the scalability is strong.

Liquid oxygen does not consume electrical power; in terms of operating costs, liquid oxygen has lowest cost.

In addition, liquid oxygen has the characteristics of low risk, safety and easy maintenance.

In terms of management risk, liquid oxygen only bears the risk of use, while molecular sieve oxygen production and membrane oxygen production need to bear the risk of production and use, and the scope of risk is relatively expanded.

From the perspective of reliability, liquid oxygen has high reliability, molecular sieve oxygen generation and membrane oxygen generation have average reliability, and there are many influencing factors.

In terms of fire risk, liquid oxygen reserves are relatively large, and the other two oxygen production methods are to produce oxygen as it is used, but there is a very important problem that molecular oxygen production and membrane oxygen production air compressors have more high-temperature radiation, which is easy to cause fire hazard.

1) Quality monitoring of medical air

Medical air is the only medical gas produced in hospitals. Used in ventilators, anesthesia machines, and mixed oxygen inhalation, the gas quality has a great impact on patients and equipment, but the current situation is not optimistic.

The main reason for the excess moisture is that the freeze dryer is commonly used to remove water. Once the design is unreasonable or the parameters do not match, the moisture content will exceed the standard during use.

2) Quality assurance of medical air

In order to ensure the quality of medical air, the specification requires that the air inlet should be located outdoors at a distance of 5m from the ground, and away from where pollutants radiate.

Judging from the usage and dew point of freeze dryers and adsorption dryers. In the case of 100% usage, it can be found that the hospital air usage is very large, maybe not much at night, but more during the day and in the morning. And because once the ventilator and anesthesia machine have water, the accuracy of the performance will be affected, so the dry air of the equipment will cause failure.

In addition, the internal control of the equipment is a hose, and there are more or less air leaks, forming frozen water and flowing into the equipment with hot air, causing damage to the equipment.

3) Vacuum source

The main choices of vacuum equipment are water ring, oil-lubricated rotary vane, oil-free rotary vane and oil-free grab pump. The price of the water ring is relatively low, and it is widely used in most hospitals.

The failure rate of the water ring vacuum pump itself is low, but it has requirements on the water temperature. If you want to maintain the temperature with circulating water, you need to add a refrigerator to the separate water tank to maintain the temperature of the water tank. The maintenance of the water ring vacuum pump is more complicated, because the water is mixed with the sucked air during the working process, and some sundries and bacteria may be mixed in the mixture, so the bacteria in the water tank are easy to breed, which poses a greater threat to health and safety.
